About us
The Alves´s group has the experience in synthesis and characterization of polymer nanocomposites based on peptide and/or inorganic nanomaterials for immobilization of biomolecules, that permit us to investigate physical and chemical issues of pertinence to energy conversion, and their pharmacological, therapeutic and industrial perspectives.
In particular research focuses on the understanding of the chemical architecture – thermodynamic – structure – physical property correlations in complex systems to achieve process and product control using state of the art techniques, which include X-ray small angle scattering on large scale facilities.
The goal is to obtain different supramolecular organizations with potential applications in energy/environment (e.g., artificial photosynthesis, solar bioprocess, bio-organic batteries) and healthcare (e.g., amyloid self-assembly, photodynamic therapy, biosensors, wearable bioelectronics).

Dr. Wendel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fundamental Chemistry from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, MG, obtained in 1999, and a Master’s and PhD in Chemistry from the University of São Paulo, SP, in 2001 and 2005, respectively.
In 2004, he conducted a Sandwich PhD abroad at the Università degli Studi di Pavia, Italy.
He completed a Postdoctoral fellowship in Physical Chemistry at the Laboratory of Electroactive Materials at IQ/USP between 2005 and 2006, which included a postdoctoral internship at the Jean Rouxel Materials Institute in France.
He was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Missouri, Columbia, USA, in 2014 (FAPESP) and again from 2023 to 2024 (CAPES-PrInt).
Currently, he is a Full Professor at the Federal University of ABC and a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow (Level 1B).
He participates in the Horizon 2020 international scientific cooperation network (“Nanopeptides and Nanosaccharides for Advanced and Sustainable Materials” – PEPSA-MATE).
His research focuses on Peptide Aggregation, Supramolecular Chemistry, Interfaces and Molecular Devices, Biosensors, and Nanocomposites.
He has supervised 15 master’s and 21 doctoral students, has 109 publications indexed in international journals, and has filed 4 patents, 2 of which are licensed to STC Silicone Técnico Composto Ltda.
He also served as the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Nanosciences and Advanced Materials at UFABC from 2022 to 2024.
